The early Preston Colliery was on Hawkey's Lane. The land was then used as a football ground.
Today there is housing at Appleby Park over the former mineshaft.
There was a later Preston Colliery on Billy Mill Lane. The land is now housing at Regency Gardens.

An explosion killed 92 men and boys at Felling Colliery in 1812.
A circular brick safety wall can be seen around the top of John Pit shaft.
It took a few seconds to hear the splash of a stone dropped down the shaft.
