Note:- A Puddler worked at a furnace where cast iron was heated to turn it into wrought iron. He used a long metal rod to drive out the impurities in the iron.
A Shingler worked at the steam hammer, wearing heavy protective clothing including a helmet with a gauze mask and also big metal boots. A bloom of wrought iron weighing 1 hundredweight (50 kg) was brought from the furnace on a wheelbarrow. The Shingler lifted the bloom on to the steam hammer with large tongs. Starting with very light taps of the hammer head, he compacted the loose bloom until it could be forged with the full power of the steam hammer. The protective clothing was needed because of the flying sparks.
The wrought iron was cut into strips and sent back to the furnace to remove impurities. The more this was repeated, the better the quality of the wrought iron and the greater its value. The grades were BEST iron, BEST BEST iron, etc.
Even though steel was being produced in quantity, there was still a demand for wrought iron in 1901.
