Equipment
It is very important that everyone has equipment that fits them properly. It is also important that everyone has proper clothing for the weather, we still practice even when it is very cold. See the attached recommended equipment document for more information.
The team has setup a google doc to help facilitate buy/selling of equipment, please fill out every column for each item: Washburn Ski Swap
Note on combi equipment
There is something called combi equipment (skis and boots), this equipment is "designed" to work for both skate and classic techniques. Combi boots are a great option for beginners, the added ankle support will help them with balance as they learn how to classic ski. Combi skis however, are NOT recommended. Skate and classic skis work differently so a ski made to work for both techniques means it is not ideal for skate and it is also not ideal for classic. Having combi skis also is a hassle when it comes to kick wax. We frequently switch between skate days and classic days which means the sticky kick wax will need to be removed before a skate practice and then reapplied before a classic practice, something that is not typically done for skiers who have 2 pairs of skis.
Note on skin skis
A newer type of waxless classic ski, typically referred to as a skin ski is becoming more popular. However, at this time we do not recommend skiers purchase skin skis. In general they are a fine ski to use and there is nothing illegal about them but the team feels it's important for skiers to learn how to kick wax and this cannot be done with a waxless ski.

There are several ski shops in area as well a ski swaps that take place. Most of the ski shops give discounts (some as much as 20%) just by mentioning that you are on a high school team, so make sure to ask them about it when you purchase new equipment. Many of these shops also rent equipment, which is a good option if your skier is new to the sport and you're not ready to invest in new equipment.
