About the Game
William and I collaborated to design a 2D racing game to pitch to the club. After pitching, we formed a team to make the game. It features 6 levels, different cars, and 7 powerups to use in battle. Race of spades is a 2 player game that ends after 5 laps. Our team of designers worked on the Game Design Document and met to brainstorm ideas for power ups.
What went right
After working on Vine Rider, I asked another team's designer, William, what went wrong with his game. He summed it up that they didn't focus enough on making the game fun. So, I decided we should add powerups with more extreme effects. We focused more on playtesting our game a lot and I think we've ended up with a very fun game to show for it.
What went wrong
Motivation is always a problem with teams that aren't actually paid and the members volunteer to work on the student project. I think our productivity increased the most during the second quarter. There are also a ton of features I would've loved to be added and cooler art that should've been made. Unfortunately, most of the art was made by me and if I knew beforehand I'd make most of the art I'd go for a more pixel based game with tiles.
