Activity 1: Creating a Vision Statement

All workshop participants were divided into groups according to the sector in which they worked: Hotels, Security, Government & Associations, and Business / Other. The groups were then asked to create a vision statement based on WHY recovery is important, and HOW recovery will be achieved.

As a community of hotels, we will make Waikiki a more resilient destination for all the world to see."

"Recovery and the safety of people depends on good communication and better training before a disaster occurs."

"Following a disaster, Waikiki needs to be rebuilt stronger and more resilient; infrastructure improved, streamlined financing for projects, businesses rebuilt and opened, and houses rebuilt. The vision is to quickly regain our position as a top notch visitor destination."

A balanced approach of preparedness to restore, preserve, and improve the economic and environmental viability of Hawaii's Waikiki with historic and cultural values is a top priority. This will be accomplished through a collusive effort of government and private organizations to engage, plan, and implement a plan for timely recovery with quick responsive action and efficiency."

As a global destination and economic engine of the state, restoring and improving Waikiki after a disaster is essential. Through collaborative efforts between sectors and stakeholders, recovery presents an opportunity to enhance Waikiki’s physical landscape, social value, and natural resources. By quickly building back stronger, smarter, and more sustainably, Waikiki will continue to be a premier destination for visitors and residents alike.
