Jolane Kathleen Long (neé Olander)

August 8, 1948 - July 20, 1997


Jolane Kathleen Olander Long, daughter of Minnie Florence Evelyn (Peterson) and Seth Altis Emmanuel Olander, was born August 8, 1948, in Red Oak, Iowa. She died after a determined battle with cancer on July 20, 1997, at the Alegent Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 48 years 11 months and 12 days.

She was united in marriage with Robert Morris Long on November 15, 1980, at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Bellevue, Nebraska. Raised on a farm southwest of Stanton, Iowa, she was a member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church there. She attended school in Villisca, Iowa, where she graduated from high school in 1966. She then attended the Immanuel School of Nursing in Omaha graduating in August 1969, and obtained her Bachelors in Nursing from Midland Lutheran College in May 1995.

She was affiliated with the Immanuel Hospital her whole career as a staff nurse primarily focused on helping people with head trauma injuries, and she later served as Program Coordinator/Case Manager for Brain Injuries for the Immanuel Rehabilitation Center. A very caring person, she was deeply committed to helping the families and friends of those in rehabilitation make adjustments. She devoted years to weekly Wednesday night support meetings held within the hospital, and she assisted in the facilitation of a disability panel which served to educate the public on life changes after a traumatic injury. Her outside activities included following the Huskers, collecting Santas and Fiestaware, and loving travel.

She was preceded in death by her parents Minnie on December 25, 1956, Altis on 19 November 1994, and her stepmother Emma on July 7, 1997.

Jolane was survived by her husband Robert of Omaha; four step children: Debbie and David Wischoff and children Cheri, David, Cody, and Nicole of Benton, Louisiana, Scott and Diane Long and children Nina and Jesse of Shreveport, Louisiana, Robert and Ann Long and son Jason of Jacksonville, Florida, and Sandy and Sid Haley of Bossier City Louisiana. She was also survived by her brother Dean and his wife Joan Olander of Papillion, Nebraska, their son Joseph, and their daughter Deann and her husband Aaron of Omaha, and many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, July 22, 1997, at the Church of the Holy Spirit, Bellevue, with the Rev. Howard Schoech officiating. Cindy Vann was the organist and Michelle Hemphill the soloist. Honorary casket bearers were C. Ray Curry; Scott VanStratten, John Coe, Max Peterson, Karl Long, and Bill Cummins. Ushers were Andy and Robby Long. Interment was private. Jolane was cremated and her remains are buried near her parents' at Mamre Cemetery in Stanton.
