Liesel Veit

Anneliese Veit (known as Liesel) was born on 12.3.1908 in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. Liesel was the youngest of five surviving children born to Julius and Katharina Veit. Liesel worked for her father Julius Veit, a prominent business man, in his Estate Agency business. She left Germany in 1933 for Barcelona, Spain. She stayed there with several German friends for around 2 to 3 years. Liesel was a friend of Walter Abrahamsohn when they were in Barcelona, Spain between 1933 and 1936. At some stage it is thought Walter Abrahamsohn and Liesel Veit became engaged. Their correspondence, referred to in this collection, spans from 1936 to April 1940.

In 1936 she left Barcelona for Haifa, Palestine with her brother Hubert and both lived and worked in at least 2 Kibbutz (Hadar Hacarmel and Beth Chaluzoth). She worked with the Palestinian Police Force, apparently as a 'woman searcher'. Her husband, James Gregory was a British Constable in the Palestinian Police Force from 11.8.1938 and served at Qiriyat Haiyim, Port and Marine until 18.10.1946. His police number was BC443.

On 22 October 1940 her Mother, Father and Sister Antonie (Toni) were transported to Camp Gurs in France. Her father died there only 2 months later. Her sister was deported to Auschwitz on 12 August 1942 where she died. Her mother Katharina survived the war in various concentration camps and emigrated to USA in 1946, where she lived the rest of her life with one of her daughters.

On 26.10.1943 Liesel and James Gregory had twins Walter and Linda. In May 1948 they left Haifa and emigrated to Bolton, England, James Gregory's home town. Liesel died on 13.2.1994.
