Margarette [Gretel] Veit

Margarette was known as Gretel. She was born on 16th October 1899, twin sister to Hans. Her brother died in infancy. Whilst living in Freiburg she worked as a masseuse, based at Kaiserstrasse 124 along with a colleague Mathilde Mueller. She married Hanns Lasotta and they had a son Franz Peter born on 16th August 1928. They lived at Kaiserstr. 124, flat 3.

In June 1936 Gretel wrote to Hubert and Liesel, her brother and sister, who were in Barcelona at this time. In her letter she described their life in Germany. The family were keeping their heads above water and whilst she was exploring opportunities to flee Germany - to Johannesburg, Rio or San Francisco - she could not bring herself to leave while the parents, Julius and Katharina, were not cared for. Because times were so hard she could not afford to take holidays. She also describes how the Jewish community were prohibited from swimming in the state baths and how they no longer saw any of their old friends, even friends from across the road had stopped saying hello.

Gretel divorced her non Jewish husband and emigrated with her son to America in May 1938. She lived in Larchmont, New York and later married Ernst Frohman. She sponsored Katharina to leave France. She anglicised her name and Margaret Frohman died on 23rd August 1973.

Her son anglicised his name to Peter L. Veit, a successful businessman Peter lives and works in Naperville, Illinois.
