Welcome to the blog of the Housing group for the 2016 Venice IQP!
Depopulation is currently a major concern in Venice, and it seems to have credible links to tourism. Since people have figured out how profitable hotels and airbnbs can be, permanent Venetian residents are having a hard time find places to live within the city. The average tourist is able and willing to pay much more to live for a week in one place than a permanent resident, a fact which is causing many locals to simply leave the island and relocate somewhere else in the country.
Our project aims to gather data on Venice's population and tourism, and gain insight into what can be done to aid locals in obtaining affordable housing within the city. - Steven
