Cannaregio overload!

For weeks we have been learning more about how Venice is experiencing the disappearance of neighborhoods and local culture as foreigners and tourists replace residents as owners and short-term renters. Vacation rentals pose a new challenge to the already strained housing market. There is clearly much opposition to tourist vacation rentals on the part of Venetians. This week I discovered another enemy of the online sites such as Airbnb, HomeAway and FlipKey: the hotel industry. The unregulated tourist rental market is luring people away from hotels. Airbnb has over 600 vacation rental listings in the Cannaregio district alone!
