This week I read existing studies concerning our topic, some in Italian including one by the Chambers of Commerce of Milan. I also consulted online databases maintained by Italian government agencies such as the Veneto regional tourism office and other governmental departments that compare housing costs among different cities in Italy. This has proven helpful to put the pricing in perspective rather than dealing only with a narrow interpretation of Venice without considering the context of costs of living elsewhere. For example, I found that while the cost of housing in Venice is not “affordable” to everyone, it is actually cheaper than a city like Rome, where housing is abundant. This is helping me to not jump to causation/conclusions about the data I find and how it applies to the online vacation rental market.
