After a term of design, a month of data collection, and a frantic week of hotfixes, the airport tourism tracker is ready to be deployed. Thanks to the help of the 25th Anniversary team and the current curator of the Dashboard, soon visitors will be able to get daily estimates of the volume of tourism coming in through Venice's nearby Marco Polo Airport.
The way it works is this: the script asks a particular resources which flights are scheduled to arrive at the airport, then looks each flight up by aircraft type and airline in a table that's been compiled earlier. That table tells the script the carrying capacity of each flight, which is then used to estimate the number of tourists filling those seats, using a ratio based on previous research and our own data collection at the airport.
You can see the Airplane Widget (and many other interesting tools on the Dashboard) here.
