As we continue our research, we are starting to gain a better understanding of the impact and importance of our project and how we want to go about the solution. We have obtained a lot of useful information regarding the tide schedules but still need to research the topic a little more. After contacting a few professors in the Civil Engineering program we are starting to get some ideas on how to implement some of our plans to read water levels and currents.
Along side our research and busy work, we were able to go out and test some of the devices we are going to implement when we are in Venice. Using a smartphone loaded with My Tracks (a GPS tracking app made by Google) we plan to measure the current and direction of the water in the canals. Above is an image of a short walk around campus recorded using My Tracks. We conducted some testing to determine the accuracy and reliability of the device on land. Although the service might not be as reliable in Venice, if the app can work as it did during our testing, there should be no problem getting the readings that we need. We can also get the raw data from the app in order to make our own calculations!
