After successfully scouting out all 6 regions of Venice for the best spots to take our measurements and solidifying the appropriate 12 hour cycle timings with Dr. Georg Umgeissor (ISMAR) it was time to do our first measurements. We had decided to take our first measurements in Cannaregio, the northern most region in Venice, coincidentally where our apartments are located. This region was chosen because it contains three parallel canals along with a few canals that connect the grand canal directly to the lagoon.
In preparation for our first cycle, we mapped out the exact paths we were going to take the night before. We also oiled the propeller device we had received from Paolo Peretti (IPROS) and made sure everything was up and running. Finally we went to bed early and got ready to take our first measurements, nice and early at 6:30 in the morning.
After a few uses of the propeller device, the wire started to rip and rendered the device useless. In between readings, we had to go back to our apartment and fix it. The measuring stick, on the other hand, worked perfectly and reliably. With the completion of our last loop at about 8:00 pm, we were glad to have finished our first "12 hour" cycle.
