Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Do I need prior martial arts experience or a high fitness level to join? A: Not at all! Beginners are always welcome, and absolutely no prior experience is required. Our instructors will guide you step-by-step, whether you are learning basic movements, self-defense, or internal energy techniques. You can learn at your own pace.
Q: Can I try a class before paying for a membership? A: Yes! We offer a free trial session for all new members. Just drop by any of our regular weekly classes to see which style suits you best. You can also join our free one-off Stress Release Workshop (Yi Jin Jing) on Friday, August 7!
Q: I am not a UTS student. Can I still join the club? A: Absolutely. The UTS Kung Fu Club is open to UTS students, staff, and the general public.
UTS Students: Pay a $10 annual club fee, and regular classes are completely free.
Non-Students/Public: Pay a $30 annual club fee, plus $70 per semester (or $20 per drop-in session) for regular classes.
Q: What should I wear to my first class? A: Wear comfortable activewear (like a t-shirt and track pants or shorts) that allows you to stretch and move freely. Please bring clean, flat-soled indoor sneakers. No specialized uniforms or equipment are required to get started.
Q: For the Friday Night classes, do I have to commit to just Wing Chun or Bagua Zhang? A: Nope! While the class splits into two paths at 6:30 PM, you are not locked into one style forever. We encourage beginners to try both Kulo Wing Chun and Bagua Zhang to see which one aligns best with their goals and body mechanics.
Q: I saw there is a Chinese Swordsmanship class. Is that included in the regular fee? A: The Chinese Swordsmanship classes (held on Mondays and Saturdays) operate with a separate fee structure due to the specialized nature of the weapons training. It is $10 per session for Club Members and $20 for Non-Members.
Q: How do I officially register after my free trial? A: You can sign up through our ActivateUTS page: ActivateUTS Kung Fu Club. Once registered, just shoot us an email at utsjingwu@gmail.com so we can add you to our active roster!
Q: Do I need to book my free trial in advance? A: While drop-ins are always welcome, we highly recommend sending a quick email to utsjingwu@gmail.com to let us know you are coming so our instructors can prepare to welcome you! (Note: RSVP is required for the August 7 Stress Release Workshop as space is limited).

The UTS Kung Fu Club is excited to host a Yiquan 意拳 (also known as Dachengquan 大成拳) workshop, the first in ten years! This special event coincides with the visit of Yiquan teacher Colin Ma 馬強, and we are honoured to invite Sifu Ma to lead the workshop.
About Yiquan
Yiquan, founded by Wang Xiangzhai 王薌齋 (1885–1963) in the 1920s, originates from Xingyi Quan and incorporates techniques from various martial arts traditions. Unlike systems with fixed routines, Yiquan emphasizes “guiding qi with intention and directing movement with intention.” Its core training focuses on Standing Meditation (Zhan Zhuang 站樁) and Testing Force (Shi Li 試力).
Yiquan practice combines martial application—such as free sparring and pushing hands—with health cultivation, making it suitable for physical rehabilitation as well as holistic body–mind development.
Standing Meditation Practice (Zhuang Gong)
Standing Meditation is the core training method of Yiquan, cultivating Hunyuan energy (渾元力) through stillness and focused intention. Yiquan standing meditation includes:
• Health Postures – Promote overall wellness, allow the central nervous system to rest and recover, provide moderate physical training, and help prevent illness while supporting recovery.
• Combat Postures – Develop structural strength and martial alignment, combined with friction-step training to improve stability and agility in movement.
• Testing Force Exercises (Shi Li) – Expand the principles developed in combat postures and apply them in motion through friction stepping and paired practice (pushing hands).
About Master Ma
Master Ma began training in boxing, judo, and other martial arts before devoting himself fully to the study of Yiquan. In addition to learning from Shi Guocai 史國才, he has visited and exchanged knowledge with over one hundred second- and third-generation Yiquan practitioners across China, gaining extensive experience and insight.

Wudang Swordmanship 13 Techniques 武當劍法十三勢 Wudang Swordsmanship 13 techniques (武當劍法十三勢)are introduced by “Magic Sword” General Li JingLin (李景林) in 1920s. General Li met and learnt Wudang Swordsmanship from a Wudang Sword Master Song WeiYi (宋唯一)from 1922. Ji(Strike), Ci(Stab), Ge(Block), Xi(Wash) are four main techniques in the original Wudang sword techniques which is taught by master Song WeiYi. General Li JingLin introduced these swords techniques to his soldiers, after he created his swordsmanship company(劍術連) in the army. General Li also invited other swordsmanship teachers such as Xing Yi Master Sun LuTang, Bagua Zhang Master Jia QiShen to his swordsmanship company as an adviser. From numerous sword sparring and experiments inside the swordsmanship company in the army, general Li and his crews extracted and analysed the practice movements. They developed 13 main techniques and called “Wudang swordsmanship 13 techniques (Wudang Jian Fa Shi San Shi)” This clip shows how the movement look like and application base on wudang sword techniques in "The Major Methods of Wudang Sword" by Huang Yuan Xiou (武當劍法大要- 黃元秀)
