My wife drives a Mitsubishi Pajero NP Exceed for the last four years. The car has a decent entertainment unit but lacks two important features – steering wheel remote control and Bluetooth integration. I found a solution for the steering wheel remote a few years ago (check this page for full details: http://sites.google.com/site/udcaus/steeringwheelremotecontrol) and recently I found a solution for the Bluetooth integration too.

Here is a brief description of the latter solution.

I bought a new Bury CC 9040 Bluetooth interface from eBay for under $100 and managed to integrate it with the car stereo. The integration is to the level that allows the Bluetooth interface to mute the car stereo during a call and to use the car power and accessory signals for automatic start up and shutdown. The sound is going through the Bluetooth interface speaker, which is hidden under the car dash board.

Here are the installation steps:

Undo the two screws circled in red on Figure 1.

Figure 1

Pull the wood grain panel as shown on Figure 2.

Figure 2

Once the panel gives way, insert your fingers in the gap (as shown on Figure 3) and carefully pull out the left side following by the right side of the panel.

Figure 3

Figure 4 shows the panel half removed.

Disconnect the emergency lights switch connector circled in red on Figure 5.

Figure 5

Undo the 8 screws circled in red on Figure 6.

Figure 6

Put a cushion in front of the head unit and pull it out until the back connectors are accessible as shown on Figure 7.

Figure 7

Attach four crimp terminals (circled in red on Figure 8) to the following wires:

1.    Black – Ground.

2.    Red - +12V battery.

3.    Blue – Accessories.

4.    Purple – Stereo mute.

Figure 8

The crimp terminals can be purchased from Farnell:

The Bury CC 9040 Bluetooth interface has four wires that will be connected to the four crimp terminals:

1.    Black – Ground.

2.    Red - +12V battery.

3.    Blue – Accessories.

4.    Yellow – Stereo mute.

Terminate the four Bury CC 9040 Bluetooth interface wires with four blade connectors. They could be purchased from Farnell:

http://au.farnell.com/jst-japan-solderless-terminals/som-51t-250/terminal-male-6-3x0-8mm/dp/3625450?Ntt=4881279

Before assembling the blade terminals, insert four blade covers (providing blade electrical cover and isolation). They could be purchased from Farnell too:

Now the Bury CC 9040 Bluetooth interface can be connected to the Pajero stereo via the four crimp terminals and the four blade connectors.

Figure 9 shows the Bluetooth interface control buttons (circled in red) and the control module and speaker (circled in yellow).

Figure 9

The Bluetooth interface control module and speaker can be inserted in the enclosure on the right of the Pajero stereo. Figure 10 shows the module and the speaker (circled in red) after the insertion.

Figure 11 shows the Bluetooth interface microphone (circled in red). The microphone cable is very easy to route on the left side of the steering wheel to the Bluetooth interface control module.
