Our Approach

This open educational resource is guided by three aims.

1. To share openly some of the the resources available for anyone interested in informatics and analytics in sport contexts.

Our links to these resources acknowledge that there are increasing numbers of digital artefacts available and that our links are just a subset of these. We think that together we can compile a remarkable open repository. We hope that our course can act as an aggregation and curation opportunity for the various communities of practice involved in informatics and analytics. We are determined to find as many open access resources as possible.

2. To use the subject matter of sport informatics and analytics to engage in conversations about personal learning environments.

We hope that the range of digital platforms we are using to connect your personal learning interests with this subject matter gives opportunities to discuss and reflect on learning in digital habitats.

3. To contribute to discussions about the epistemological foundations of sport informatics and analytics and the flourishing of ethical practice in the observation, recording and analysis of performance in play, games and sport.

This is a time of rapid expansion of informatics and analytics as fields of study and as practical activities. We hope that discussions about the quantification of performance will lead to reflections about the ethical framework within which we will work as our digital world is transformed by technological innovation.

We are hopeful that these three aims enable us to connect each of us (William Dutton, 2008) in our personal contexts and as a reflective, global community of practice. We hope too that we can contribute to the growth of a new pedagogy (Teachonline, 2016).

(There is a two minute podcast about these aims.)
