Fractals in Nature and Iterated Function Systems

With Andrea Arauza, Frank Kloster, and Priyanka Rajan

Nature often admits patterns and designs which are called "fractal" and fractal geometry can be used to understand these patterns. Iterated function systems are powerful tools for describing patterns with equations. In this project we will explore the mathematics behind iterated function systems and use computer programs to try to mimic the patterns nature creates. Students will venture into the great outdoors in search of fractal patterns and then devise an iterated function system that mimics the patterns they have found.
