Image Processing

With Lisa Schneider and

How does a satellite tell a road from a stream? How did your camera know someones eyes were closed? How are automated cars staying in the right lane? Image processing is a rapidly expanding field that seems to find a new application daily. Behind these questions lies a rich collection of mathematical tools and equally interesting problems.

Starting with the question "What is image processing", our goal will be to provide a survey from the natural first approach at the problem of image processing to current techniques. This will involve understanding the mathematics that drives these techniques as well as constructing examples to show the mathematics in action. This project is open to any level of student, as the depth and speed with which we explore this subject will be guided by the participants.
