Small School; Huge Opportunities
Located only 35 miles north of New York City, Tuxedo is a small suburban community with a strong commitment to providing a high quality education for all students. Recognized nationally by US News and World Reports and Newsweek, and The Daily Beast for its academic programs, George F. Baker High School capitalizes on its small size to provide an individualized approach in a comprehensive public school setting. With approximately 330 students and 34 full and part-time faculty the school has a student to teacher ratio of less than 10:1 (as of the 2013-14 school year), not including a student support team of three school counselors, a school psychologist, one assistant principal and one high school principal. Our school is a place where the students and teachers work closely together to achieve success on an individual basis and collectively as a school.
George F. Baker High School offers a range of academic programs to meet the needs of students at all levels. With a combination of accelerated, honors, Advanced Placement, and college level courses students have access to a course of studies that will enable them to be successful in high school and ensure that they will be college and career ready. Current college level courses that are offered at our school in partnership with Syracuse University, SUNY Albany and SUNY Orange provide students with opportunities to earn over 30 college credits at our school. Our school also provides a full array of support services for students with diverse and special learning needs. These programs include self-contained and collaborative class settings and related services.
Student Life
Our school balances a strong emphasis on academic programs with a variety of extra-curricular, co-curricular, and non-academic activities. Pep rallies, student
produced concerts and plays and numerous community service projects foster a “family feel” among our students and staff. Students are encouraged to broaden
their education and enrich their school life with involvement in extracurricular activities. Over 80% of the student body is involved in at least one extracurricular activity and many students participate in more than one club or team.
Current Club offerings include Band, Bowling, Concert Choir, Select Choir, Diversity Club, Dance, Drama, Engineering Club, Interact Club, Jazz Ensemble, Junior State of America, Literary Magazine, Math Team, National Honor Society, Pep Squad, Production Club, SADD, Safe School Ambassadors, Student Council, and Yearbook.
Interscholastic Sports programs include Baseball (boys), Basketball (boys/girls), Cross Country (boys/girls), Rowing (boys/girls), Soccer (boys/girls), Softball (girls), Volleyball (girls), and Wrestling (boys).
In a region where graduating class sizes supersede the size of the Tuxedo STEM Academy’s entire program, there is an interest for alternative programs that are smaller in nature thus providing smaller classroom sizes and a greater opportunity for one-on-one attention. The George F. Baker High School has always prided itself on its unique size, academic excellence, and strong placement in two and four year college programs. The Tuxedo STEM Academy seeks to continue that tradition while providing greater opportunities for all students throughout the region while maintaining its unique size and characteristics. Therefore, the Tuxedo STEM Academy also will attract students from the surrounding districts who have an interest in expanding their learning opportunities in STEM through project-based learning and are also seeking the uniqueness of the safe, small, and personalized school environment.
