“Instructional Technology is ubiquitous, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities, our homes. Yet most schools lag far behind when it comes to integrating technology into classroom learning. Many are just beginning to explore the true potential tech offers for teaching and learning. Properly used, technology will help students acquire the skills they need to survive in a complex, highly technological knowledge-based economy” (http://www.edutopia.org/technology-integration-introduction)
The Tuxedo STEM Academy has developed an academic plan that incorporates the ideology set forth by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills (http://www.p21.org), The International Society for Technology in Education (http://www.ISTE.org), The New York State Association for Computers and Technology in Education (http://www.nyscate.org) in which collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, project based learning, and technology integration are cornerstones in learning.
Through Google Apps for Education and the introduction of Google Chromebooks, The Tuxedo STEM Academy will develop a 1:1 device initiative in all grades 9 through 12. Students will receive a Chromebooks when they enter the program, which they will keep through graduation. Students will have the ability to use their Chromebooks during class to work on projects, take notes, and collaborate with classmates far and near. The device will become their digital portal to online resources, experts, and class materials expanding learning opportunities well beyond the four walls of the school day. By adopting a 1:1 device initiative, The Tuxedo STEM Academy will also repurpose traditional computer lab space throughout the building. In addition to providing a pod of computer stations, the computers labs will be transformed into “makerspaces” where students will be able to share ideas and common interests.
