Dr. Oliver M. Lee Scholarship 2026
Scholarship application deadline (via Scholars App) -- May 12, 2026.
REQUIREMENTS
Applicant is a U.S. citizen and State of Hawaii resident
Applicant is of high moral character.
Applicant plans to or is currently pursuing post-secondary education and/or technical training.
Applicant is able to provide evidence of past educational achievements with latest grade point average (GPA) from high school and/or college); Minimum GPA: 3.5 (with reference to the 4 point scale)
Applicant engages in community service.
A. Notes:
The applicant does not have to be Chinese to apply for this scholarship. Strong consideration is given to applicants of Hakka background or those with an interest in the Chinese/Hakka culture shown by the submission of the short one-page essay
Past recipients are not eligible for this scholarship.
B. PROCEDURE: Submit the following by May 12, (via Scholar's App)
1. Application form
2. Resume
3. A short, 1-page, double spaced essay, on 1 of 3 topics below, selected by the applicant.
a. Select one of the following topics or issues from the list below.
1. Pick one, (1), current issue (social, economic, cultural, etc.) facing the local Chinese community and propose a solution.
2. Discuss your personal experience learning about the Hakka Chinese community, either here or abroad.
3. How would you explain to others what it means to be Hakka in modern society?
b. Submission
1. one (1) sheet, 8.5 x 11 inches, (US letter size)
2. Font: Times New Roman, 12-point size
3. line spacing: double
4. Type your name in the upper right-hand corner
5. Note: The use of "AI" for topic research is permitted, however, the submitted essay should be authored by the applicant.
4. Two (2) letters of recommendation from instructors and/or mentors (non-family)
5. A copy of your latest high school and/or college transcript.
C. Selection Process:
1 Applications and all supporting documents must be submitted by May 12, 2026. Each complete application packet received by the deadline will be evaluated on:
A. 20%, Accomplishments (from resume and transcript)
B. 20%, Community Service (from resume and letters of recommendation)
C. 60%, Essay on the applicant's selected topic from the essay topic list.
The TTA Scholarship Committee will make the selections and report to the TTA Board of Directors.
Upon approval by the Board, the 3 winners will be contacted by the Scholarship Chair and will be asked to attend the next TTA General Membership Meeting to be presented to the General Assembly and receive the scholarship, (keyed to timely COVID/pandemic meeting/gathering restrictions and common sense). Headshot photos of winners will be requested for the TTA website scholarship page.
