Troop 285 is a scout-led troop.
Troop 285 of Albuquerque is a high-adventure troop. We are chartered by The Rotary Club of Albuquerque Del Sol and meet every Monday from 7 pm until 9 pm at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 9500 Constitution Avenue, Albuquerque, NM 87110. If you would like to join Troop 285 or want more information about the troop, please feel free to visit us at any Monday meeting or email us at info@troop285abq.org.
Troop 285 holds 10 weekend campouts a year, a one-week-long campout in July, and 2-3 high-adventure treks each year, including hiking and canoeing.
We are continually striving to provide a program that challenges the scouts and builds leadership skills in each scout while also instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan.
Troop 285 believes all scouts should be given every opportunity and every effort to help them achieve the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. There is only one achievement that a teenage boy can attain that he can proudly put on a resume at age 50, and that is the rank of Eagle Scout.
The Troop committee and scout leaders have built a program over the years that aids and encourages scouts to advance in rank, with most scouts achieving the rank of 1st class within their first year. Ultimately, many scouts will reach the rank of Eagle in Troop 285. We are extremely proud that Troop 285 has had 233 scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout over the last 70+ years. This is a testament to the program that Troop 285 has built over the years, encouraging all scouts to have fun and achieve any goal they set for themselves.
We realize that not all scouts will want to advance in rank, and that's OK! Troop 285's program is balanced so all scouts, first and foremost, will have fun whether or not they advance in rank. Troop 285 is a scout-led troop, empowering young individuals to lead, grow, and succeed in their own unique ways.
The Adult leaders of Troop 285 believe...
“Empowering scouts to be leaders is the core of Scouting.
Scouts learn by doing, and what they do is lead their patrols and their troop.
The scouts themselves develop a troop program, then take responsibility for figuring out how they will achieve the goals.
One of our most important challenges is to train scout leaders to run the troop by providing direction, coaching, and support.
The scouts will make mistakes now and then and will rely on the adult leaders to guide them.
But only through real hands-on experience as leaders can scouts learn to lead.”
