At the end of the tenth year, an oracle said that Troy would fall only with the use of the bow of Hercules, which was in possession of Philoctetes, who was on Lemnos. Philoctetes had been injured during the passing of the campaign from Lemnos, the wound was contaminated and as a result it emitted a rotting smell which could not be tolerated by the Achaeans. For this reason he was abandoned there. Odysseus and Diomedes were able to acquire these weapons and use them as a bargaining tool to bring him to Troy. Philoctetes’ wound had healed in the meantime. During the upcoming battles Philoctetes, who was an excellent archer, fought with great bravery and killed Paris with the bow of Hercules. Following this event, Helen was wedded to Paris’ brother, Diiphobos.
Neoptolemos and Eurypylus
According to the prophecies which were told by Elenos, the kidnapped son of Priam who was clairvoyant, the Achaeans would have to bring the son of Achilles, Neoptolemus in order to get to Troy. Neoptolemos was the son of Achilles and Deidamia, one of the daughters of King Likomedes of Skyros, from when Achilles was hiding there, to avoid the war. As a new Achilles, Neoptolemos rushed unstoppable in the battle and killed many Trojans. Soon the king Eurypylus of Mysia, son of Telephos and the sister of Priam Astyochis, entered the battle against the Achaeans. Eurypylus accomplished many victories with his troops, but was killed by Neoptolemos in a fierce duel between them by his spear.
