Along with the mortals, the gods were also fighting among themselves. Athena threw a stone at Ares throwing him to the ground. Aphrodite tried to lift him up, but takes a hit and also falls down. Poseidon challenges Apollo to duel, but the latter did not accept and fled to Troy. Hera struck Artemis causing her arrows to be scattered to the ground below. Eventually the gods retreated and returned to Olympus to tend to their wounds.
Chased by Achilles the Trojans retreated behind the walls, but Hector remained outside to face him. His people were shouting to him to come into the city and escape but he did not listen. In the duel between the two heroes, Achilles finally killed Hector, tied his body to his chariot and dragged him triumphantly up to the camp of the Achaeans. Later, the Achaeans made the obituaries and games in honour of Patroklus.
One night, Priam himself, guided by Hermes arrived at the scene of Achilles and pleaded for the deliverance of the body of his son in an intense emotional monologue that made even the rigid Achilles bend. The two men agreed to a temporary truce, and the dead Hector was handed over to his relatives. The funeral of Hector in Troy threw into heavy mourning the whole city.
