Meanwhile Peleus and Thetis had a son and named him Achilles. According to Oracle, Achilles would either live a quiet life and die an old man or be killed young in battlefield, but would gain immortality and his accomplishments would be told through the centuries. When Achilles was nine years old, the seer Calchas predicted that Troy would not fall without his help. Thetis, who knew all the prophecies, tried to make him immortal as an infant. So she put Achilles bathe in the river Styx in the underworld making him immortal in the places touched by the river water. Since, however, she kept him from the heels, this point remained vulnerable (Achilles Heel). As he came of age he became one of the most talented warriors. When in his later years he would be required to fight at Troy, because of the prophecy of Calchas, Thetis would hide Achilles to the island of Skyros, the palace of King Likomidis, dressed like a girl so that no one would recognize him.
