The Achaean forces originally gathered at Aulis. All the old suitors were present except the King of Cyprus, Kinyras, who promised to send 50 ships. Eventually he sent only one leaded by Mygdalion and 49 other models of ships made of mud. The last who came at Aulis, was the fifteen year old Achilles.
Thetis had hidden Achilles in Skyros. Odysseus, Ajax and the teacher of Achilles Phoenix were sent to call him to war. The mother of Achilles dressed him in women's clothing so as not to be perceived and thus avoid involvement in war. Achilles was revealed after a trick of Odysseus, who pretended to be a textiles trader to the daughters of the king of the island Lycomedes. Inside the basket under the textiles he had put some weapons, which attracted the interest of a girl who was none other than the skilful in battle Achilles. In this way he revealed his identity and agreed to participate in the war, despite the fact that he was the only one who did not participate in the group of suitors who swore to preserve his marriage to Menelaus.
