Diomedes objected with passion to this prospect and eventually persuaded everyone to stay. Phoenix, Ajax the son of Telamon and Odysseus made a further appeal to Achilles to return to battle as there was an imminent danger for the greek ships to burn. He remained adamant.
The next day started with Zeus clearly favoring the Trojans, who led by Hector came to burn the ship Protessilaos. Despite the secret efforts of Poseidon and Hera, who tried to seduce Zeus as a distraction, the Trojans now threatened the camp and the ships of the Achaeans. Agamemnon, Odysseus and Ajax fought bravely but in vain.
Patroclus eventually persuaded Achilles to give him his armour to fight, pretending to be the demigod hero, in order to drive the Trojans away from the coast.
