What to Bring

Basic Packing List

  • Passport

  • Photocopies of all important documents, including passport information.

  • Insurance information and note card detailing medical conditions/allergies (keep in wallet)

  • Over the counter medication e.g.: aspirin, anti-diarrhea agents, antiseptic ointment, bandage, etc.

  • Any prescription medicines you are currently taking

  • Hat

  • Notepad, pencil or pen.

  • Insect repellent.

  • Swimsuit

  • Plastic bags for wet or dirty clothes.

  • Work gloves (cloth ones work fine)

  • Waterless hand sanitizer

  • Toiletries

  • Raincoat

  • Sweater and/or sweatshirt. July is winter in South Africa and temperatures can range from 50-65 degree Fahrenheit. (You may want to start work mornings with several layers of clothes and shed them as it warms up).

  • Sun block

  • Shampoo

  • Soap (antibacterial)

  • Fingernail clippers, nail file

  • Daily work clothes (for construction –no shorts and tank tops- see above guidelines)

  • One pair of nice clothes for evenings out

  • One set of casual clothes for R&R

  • Camera, film, batteries

  • Shoes: good shoes for walking and work (heavy work boots are usually not needed), flip flops, one pair of nice sandals or shoes

  • Baby wipes and small packages of Kleenex

What You Should Bring For the Work Site

  • Gloves (you will use them to pass blocks and to do bagging).

  • Clothes that you do not mind getting dirty!

  • A wide-brimmed hat.

  • Strong closed shoes (no sandals).

  • Water bottle (freeze it the night before).

  • Sun block.

  • Raincoat otherwise you will be given a township raincoat AKA a black refuse bag!

  • Soccer ball, cricket bat/ ball, Frisbee, face paints, story books – all for sharing time with the children.
