The Team

LYNN GUERCIO

Hi, I'm Lynn! Like you, I'm looking forward to our serving adventure and privilege to contribute to a worthy cause. This middle child (3 of 4) was born, bread, and brain-washed in a suburb outside Chicago.

I have many interests (reading, gardening, photography, technology, most sports, travel, adventure, etc.) and thrive on academic and career growth. Yes, a walking conflict! However, this blessing has built the foundation for a career in Workforce Learning and Development (helping companies develop people or process to drive profit).

Here are 3 fast facts; I worked for an oil company in West Africa, teach fitness PT - special populations, and skated with the Chicago Blackhawks for charity (note – only 2 of the 3 are true… guesses?)

MARION MALONEY

I was born and raised in New Jersey, spending all my summers at the Jersey Shore, either in Long Branch or Monmouth Beach. I have been employed by Allstate Insurance Company for 28 years and I work as an investigator in the Special Investigation Unit. I enjoy to travel and have been to Italy, England, Ireland and recently to Mexico, ( Cabos ).

I am married and we have one son, Kenny, who will also be volunteering for the 2015 South Africa build. This is our first Global Village trip and we are very excited to be part of the team.

KENNY WILHALME

My name is Kenny Wilhalme and I will be going on Habitat for Humanity build in South Africa. I was born and have lived in Oceanport, New Jersey, all my life. I am 17 years old and a junior at the Academy of Allied Health and Science. While this is my first build, I have done a little bit of traveling in my life, visiting Ireland, Italy and Mexico. I enjoy biking, hiking, and fishing. I also coach boys’ basketball in the winter. I know we are all going to have a great time on this trip and I hope to see you there!

TREVOR MORRIS

Hey y'all! My name is Trevor Morris, I am a 22 year old college student currently attending the University of California Santa Barbara. I am graduating in June with a degree in Biopsychology and will be moving up to Redwood City for work. I love the outdoors and one of my favorite things to do is go backpacking. Throughout my life I have not had the opportunity to travel much past the US and Canada and I figure this is the perfect opportunity to get out and experience another culture while giving back to those who are less fortunate. Looking forward to meeting and having a wonderful time with all of you!

KETHEVANE GORJESTANI

My name is Ket and I'm 31 years old. I live in Paris, France, where I'm a journalist working for the French international news channel France 24. I started working there nearly 5 years ago, after getting a Masters at the Columbia School of Journalism, where I met Ann and Larry.I've been to Cape Town once before, about 10 years ago and loved it. I can't wait to go back and see how it has changed. This will be my second Habitat build, after Vietnam in 2012. It was a great experience and I'm really looking forward to this new trip and meeting all of you.

See you in July!

TYLER NOLAND

My name is Tyler and I'm 32, live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and I'm very excited to be joining the trip. After growing up in Pittsburgh, I attended Miami University in Ohio prior to returning home, where I currently work in commercial real estate. I love to travel, but particularly love finding unique ways to experience a culture. I guess I just like adventures. I've never been on a trip with Habitat, but have volunteered locally and found it's not only rewarding but it's a great way to build friendships. Coupling that with travel seemed like a good idea, so here I am. I am a particularly unskilled laborer as far as building a house goes, but I excel at carrying stuff and cleaning up. And I'm eager to learn a new trade or two. As far as recreation I love doing pretty much anything active...sports, hiking, walking the dog, whatever it may be. This will be my first trip to Africa and as I said I'm very excited. I'm equally as, if not more, excited to meet everyone on the team and share the experience with you all. See you in Cape Town!

VISSIA VANESSA HIDALGO

I used to be a professional singer/dancer throughout my teens and late twenties. While attending college and performing, I was also working with children (teaching dance and as a teacher's assistant in LAUSD). I realized that my true talent was teaching children. I worked as a pre-school teacher as well as teaching dance. Now I'm a director and a co-owner of My Gym Children's Fitness Center in Los Angeles. I teach gymnastics, dance and karate to children from 6 months-teenagers. I volunteered with many organization such as Schools On Wheels, Head Start programs and now Monday Night Mission. I've always wanted to volunteer in Africa. I'm excited and honored to be apart of this group.

BETSY WHITNEY

Hey team! I'm Betsy and can't tell you how excited I am to be a part of this trip. After growing up in Philadelphia and Houston, I now live in Brooklyn and work in the music industry in New York City. As a proud Penn State nittany lion, I also spent some time in Manchester, UK, during college which so far has been the greatest time of my life. This will be my first time south of the equator and my first time in Africa as well. I've wanted to join a Habitat build for years and years and am thrilled to finally be doing it! (It’s about time I put all those hours spent watching HGTV to good use, right?) In my free time, I enjoy going to even more concerts, listening to music, yoga, snuggling my cat Pearl, writing, Broadway, putzing around with the latest digital trend, and a good glass of wine. Looking forward to meeting everyone in Cape Town!

PORTIA WOODHOUSE

Hello! I live in Chicago and work for Grainger as an Agile Coach (I help teams introduce new ways to more effectively and efficiently deliver IT solutions; currently working with our IT teams who support our website and mobile application). I love biking, running, and rollerblading along Chicago’s beautiful lakefront. I’m also on a co-ed flag football team and dragon boat racing team. This is my first Habitat for Humanity project. Looking forward to making memories with all of you!

CASSIDY BECK

I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1995 and am currently studying at the University of Stellenbosch in my 2nd year. I am a head leader at my residence where I help lead and coordinate events and programs for fellow university students and in any free time, you can spot me on the soccer field or running in our beautiful surrounding wine farms. I am passionate about family, sport and community and have always dreamed about joining Habitat for Humanity. As a proud native South African I can't wait to show you all my beautiful country and for you to experience the amazing culture and friendly people that await behind every door. I look forward to meeting everyone, developing new skills and learning new things that I will keep with me for a lifetime.

KENDALL BELL

Hey! My name is Kendall Bell, I was born in Chicago, IL and I currently live in North Carolina. My most memorable travel experiences include my exchange trip to Argentina and trip to Hawai’i. I’m a rising freshman at Duke University and while I had some service experience in high school volunteering, I’m very much looking forward to this Global Village trip and using it to set my bar for service higher in the future. This is also my 1st Global Village trip and 1st trip to the continent (not country) of Africa. I’ve volunteered in the back room of a Habitat store, but this will be my first build. I can’t wait to see South Africa, and most importantly build much needed shelter for families.

KEITH BELL

I am from Long Island, NY and currently live in North Carolina. I have lived in 8 US cities during the course of a 30 year corporate career primarily focused in the wholesale and retail end of selling gasoline and diesel fuel. I am married with 2 children, one of whom is on the Global Village Trip with me. I am ecstatic that we are doing this trip together.

This is my 1st Global Village trip and 1st trip to the continent of Africa. I have worked on 2 US Habitat builds in the US and a build with another organization.

I am excited about joining the build and this team in helping a family gain a home. I am also looking forward to seeing the wonderful country of South Africa.

TIFFANY PADILLA

Hello! My name is Tiffany Padilla, I am 25 years old and currently serving active duty in the USAF. I am originally from Santa Maria, CA but I am currently stationed in Tokyo, Japan. I have also been stationed in Texas and Honduras. I travel a lot due to my career but I also love to travel on my own. I recently realized I can do the tourist thing in just about any country and its going to feel the same. I wanted to not only travel somewhere new but to also give back and truly learn about the country and their culture. I hope to make some great friends during this trip and I am really excited to help out!

LINDA JUDGE

I was born in New York, but have spent most of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area. I started my work life as a research scientist, eventually went to law school, and have worked both in-house and in small and large law firms, often serving as a liaison between technical, business and legal teams. I currently work as an in-house intellectual property and corporate attorney for Affymetrix, a DNA diagnostic company. When my daughter, Zoe, was in high school, I was a chaperone on service trips to Guatemala, Costa Rica and Jaipur, India with the Young Dreamers Network. We wanted to join another international service trip after Zoe graduated and I have been very impressed with the Habitat organization when I volunteered locally, so South Africa here we come!

ZOE JUDGE

Hello! I was born and raised in Redwood City, California and I am now a sophomore at University of Colorado at Boulder where I study psychology. I hope to one day move back to the Bay Area and attend graduate school in San Francisco to become a clinical psychologist. In high school I was a part of The Young Dreamer's Network; I went on service trips to Guatemala, Costa Rica and India. My mom, Linda, and I became very passionate about service on these trips and have missed our yearly trips since high school ended. After my mom volunteered for Habitat locally we decided to check out the other trips that were available. We saw the South Africa trip and couldn't miss it!

DORY MOORE

Hi! I live in Los Angeles and have taught elementary school in South LA for the past 30+ years. (I’m pretty sure I have the world’s best job!) I graduated from UCLA with a BA in Anthropology and a Masters in Public Health.I love to travel, and got my kick-start living in Kenya for 2 years in the 70’s. It was a life-changing opportunity. Visiting South Africa has been my great desire since the fall of apartheid. I have been slow to fulfill this dream, but am incredibly excited that I will now have the opportunity to do so! Nelson Mandela is a personal hero, and I have been a supporter of Habitat for Humanity for many years, both of which add to my excitement and gratitude for being able to participate in this build!

In addition to travel and teaching, I love languages, rock climbing, Yosemite, gardening, basketry, my two terrier mixes (Jack and Carney), my husband Steve (another teammate!),and meeting people--like all of you!

ALEXA FISCHER

Hello fellow adventures! Whilst paying my taxes in New York City for 10+ years now has allowed me to indulge regularly in her fantastic museums & restaurants - I still consider myself a proud southern New Mexican - where I grew up at play in the desert dodging rattlesnakes, catching lizards, spotting coyotes and riding horses when I wasn’t at soccer practice or ballet lessons.

My penchant for doing volunteer work began in high school when I joined the Key/Kiwanis Club where we did things like go door-to-door to collect canned goods for local needy families, as well as make visits to a senior citizen home and tutor children at a homeless shelter. In recent years, I decided I would like to expand on these types of efforts so that they eventually becomes my life’s primary focus.

I joined my first Global Village project in June 2014 to Deir Alla, Jordan, which was a fantastic experience. I am fluent in French & Japanese as well as speak a smattering of Arabic, Spanish & Italian since I love to travel and have been all over the world. However, I have never set foot in Africa so I am very proud to be on this Mandela project team with all of you and excited to explore Cape Town and possibly a safari &/or wine tour together! I have a funny feeling it’s going be a lot like home (plus the glorious oceanscape!)

NABILA RAHMAN

Hi My name is Nabila Rahman. I just turned twenty-four years old in the beginning of April. I am from New York City. I graduated from St. John’s University with a degree in computer science. I work for Standard & Poor’s Capital IQ as a business systems analyst. I love to travel, read books, spend quality time with my friends and family and my cat. My first trip with the Global Village program was in April of 2014 in Phuket, Thailand. I can honestly say it was the best trip of my life. It was the most amazing and rewarding experience. Not only did I get to help a family have a new home, I also had the opportunity to make great friends and explore a beautiful country like Thailand.

I am very excited for this Nelson Mandela build in South Africa and can’t wait to meet everyone on this trip!

IRWIN ARIEFF

I'm a longtime and mostly retired writer, editor and journalist who covered a broad range of subjects including the United Nations, international diplomacy, U.S. politics, the White House, French politics and lifestyles, science and medicine and cooking and restaurants.

Before leaving daily journalism in 2007, I was a Reuters correspondent for 23 years, serving in senior posts in Washington, Paris and New York as well as at the United Nations. I later edited two books on world affairs for the United Nations Association-USA and was a regular contributor to the association’s online publications before its demise in 2011.

Most of my writing these days appears on Passblue.com, a private non-profit website serving the United Nations community and affiliated with the City University of New York’s Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies. Among other things, I write a regular column for the site called UN EATS, which reviews restaurants in the U.N. neighborhood. I previously wrote restaurant reviews for The Washington Post and Washington City Paper in the 1980s and 1990s with my wife, Deborah Baldwin, now an editor with This Old House magazine. Deborah and I have a daughter, Alexis, 34, who lives in Washington, works for the Congressional Research Service as an Africa analyst, and is perfect in every way.
