What we are doing:
This week we will spend 2-3 days completing the NWEA test. The students will be taking the test on the chrome books. In between testing we will begin the following inquiries:
MATH: We will be working on detecting patterns in division. Students will be multiplying multi-digit numbers and using their knowledge of place value to estimate.
READING: Students are reading novels. They are exploring descriptive language in text, character development, and making connections between texts.
WRITING: Students are exploring narrative writing. They have begun to write their Alien stories. Now they will be using rubrics and check lists to evaluate and improve on their writing.
TRANSDISCIPLINARY UNIT: Students will be inquiring into the following generalization: Human cultures develop in response to available resources. We will be learning about Motivation for exploration (Causation: Why is it like it is?), the influence of available resources (Connection: how are resources connected to culture) and Settlements (Function: How does it work?)
What you can do to help:
TESTING: Make sure your child has a good breakfast and brings healthy snacks to school.
MATH: Students need to be fluent with their multiplication facts in order to quickly solve problems. Making sure your student knows his or her facts is the best way to prepare him or her for this unit. Watch for your student's math papers to come home and have him or her explain how the answers were found.
READING: Read a novel with your student at home. Discuss the characters. What motivates them? What affects them? How do they change? Find descriptive language that really helps you to "see a picture in your mind". Collect interesting phrases. Share them at school.
WRITING: Watch for the checklist/rubrics coming home. Access your child's story and discuss the development.
Unit: Talk about your own explorations. Where have you gone? Why did you go there? Where do you want to go? Why do you want to go there?
As always, I'm available if you wish to make an appointment to discuss any concerns you have.
Have a great week!
