The Rangitiki
The sailing ship ‘Rangitiki’ was a 1,182 gross ton sailing vessel. Built in England in 1863, she was of iron construction with three masts. She had accommodation for 300 immigrants and 1st class cabins for up to 20 passengers.1
In 1882 she arrived at Lyttelton on her 11th voyage, this trip taking 96 days.
On board was Waldemar S MALAQUIN, travelling as a second class passenger, because of this I have been unable to find his name on a passenger list - the only lists that National Archives holds are those for assisted immigrants. However we can find him in the "The Star Friday December 28th 1894 page 2 Shipping Arrived Lyttelton
July 5 1882 - Rangitiki, ship, 1200 tons, Millman, from London. N.Z.S. CO., agents."
1 One of the N. Z. Shipping Company's fast sailors, the Rangitiki, 1225 tons,....was formerly known as the Scimitar. She was to make two voyages to New Zealand as Scimitar (Auckland and Port Chalmers) and twenty two as Rangitiki.
