1. Reason for the trip.
a. The Project was a summer study in Trinidad to study the unique culture of Trinidad.
b. PLU sponsored class, studying culture, at West Indies University in Trinidad.
c. My Son was the chaperone and leader of the students from PLU.
d. My Granddaughter, still in high school, was going to study in this class and I went along because of my interest in culture and to chaperone my granddaughter.
2. Our quest was to understand the culture of Trinidad. We started with the Trinidad Carnival characters.
3. The Carnival is a celebration common to most South American and West Indies countries that has a climax on what we call Fat Tuesday. The Trinidad celebration uses many characters in its Carnival that are quite unique to Trinidad; although they may be similar to other West Indies island cultures, they are not similar to South American countries.
The genetics of culture is in the stories we tell. These ideas are developed from the Social Development Theory of Lev Vygotsky. Cognitive development is based on the concept of genetics. And on the concepts of Carl Jung.
