Back in the day the grand homes of Europe were designed with beautifully carved picture rails, used to display those enormous and heavy oil paintings that were so popular. As with many design trends the idea caught on and began to appear in ordinary family homes. Picture rails made their way across the ocean and many still survive in older-style Australian buildings.
Gallery Hanging System
In time, however, art galleries across the world started experimenting with different art hanging systems, systems that would allow them to constantly change and rearrange the artworks. That's how the gallery hanging system was born.
Just like the old picture rails, a gallery hanging system requires a fixed structure. Today lengths of track are used, that can be easily screwed to the wall to provide a strong base. With that in place, there are just two more components: picture hangers and picture hanging hooks.
Adjustable Picture Hanging Hooks
Both these components need to be adjustable, to allow the same hanging system to be used again and again. Professional picture hangers need to be able to move side to side, whilst the adjustable picture hanging hooks go up and down.
The beauty of this system is that you don't end up with multiple holes in your walls and it's near impossible to hang a picture crookedly. Professional picture hangers come in different styles and materials; the most popular being clear hangers or stainless steel cables. Unlike the old picture rails, the artwork hangs nice and close to the wall, rather than leaning forward.
Perfect For The Home
The picture hanging hooks must be adjustable and this is sometimes done using the good old Allen key. Once locked in place, and depending what type of hook you use, these can hold artwork weighing many kilos.
Designed for art galleries, and now found in galleries, museums, universities and corporate buildings around the globe, the gallery hanging system is now available for the home.
