If you’ve visited any photographic exhibitions lately you may have noticed that the pieces were hung using a traditional picture rail. Made popular during Victorian times, the picture rail is enjoying a comeback.
Black and white photographers in particular tend to favour the traditional picture rail system. By using clear hangers or stainless-steel cable, the photographs appear to be hanging without support. It’s also easier to hang every piece at the same height and space them out down to the millimetre.
Traditional Art Hanging System
The traditional art hanging system is also proving popular with home owners, particular those who have made the smart decision to renovate an older home. Traditional Queenslanders really lend themselves to this system.
If you’re renovating and you’re keen to reintroduce original features, this would be a great start. Not only would it look stunning but it’s also functional.
Over the centuries the traditional picture rail system was used throughout the grand homes of Europe. Positioned close to the ceiling or coving, the rail was used in combination with massive brass hooks to hang the heaviest of pieces. The only disadvantage was that the pieces tended to lean out too far from the wall.
Original Style and Charm
The modern picture rail system has overcome this problem. Take the Gallery System for example. Its traditional art hanging system uses hangers and hooks that hold picture close to the wall. With the added bonus of newer technology, these systems offer amazing strength and flexibility.
Original picture rails were generally made of molded plaster. Today, it’s still possible to buy picture rails from the larger hardware or home decorating stores, and they tend to be made of wood or aluminium.
Once fitted you simply add the Gallery System traditional picture rail hangers and adjustable hooks. These attach to special hooks that hang from the rail itself and are even available in traditional solid brass.
It’s easy, it’s stylish and it’s affordable so why not add a picture rail to your home.
