So, there I was admiring photographs of a beautifully renovated Queenslander home when I spotted it: a traditional picture rail system in the living area. Whilst this form of hanging artwork originated from the great houses of Europe, the picture rail is also an integral part of the design of the old Queenslander.
Picture rail systems were originally used to support heavy works of art in Victorian homes. The wall construction meant that a nail and hook was unlikely to hold. Instead, a moulding was applied near the top of the wall, from which large brass picture hooks could be hung.

Many of the surviving original Queenslanders were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, so it’s no surprise they should echo the European homes the early settlers had left behind. These days, old Queenslanders are highly sought-after and the more original features they have the better.
You’ll notice in real estate that the price of a Queenslander goes up if it has VJ walls, high ceilings, polished floorboards, fretwork, French doors and more. Of course, not all Queenslanders are in good repair – hence the renovation craze! The great thing is, however, that savvy companies now produce replicas of these original pieces, including the picture hanging rail system.
Picture Hanging Rail System
There are different types of rail on the market, and as many types of hanging system. However, there are a few things to be aware of. The best picture hanging rail system is the one that incorporates hangers and hooks. It works quite simply: First, you hang the hook on the rail, and it is possible to buy traditional-style brass hooks.
Next, you attach the hangers. Stainless steel is an excellent choice but, if you feel it detracts from the authenticity of your home, the clear tape ones are excellent. Then just slide on the adjustable hooks and you’re done.
A picture rail system like this will not only add to the charm of your home but will also make picture hanging a breeze.
