Pimping your motor

Here be stuff you can add to make your motor look or operate better.

Lets start with the:

Dipstick

The photo on the right shows a neat solution to the dipstick arrangement using the short Cummins bayonet locking dipstick.

The Dennis Dart alloy sump allows the dipstick to be fitted on either side of the motor. Indeed if you wanted to, you could have one on each side.

If you have the port engine with the dipstick on the right and vice-versa for the starboard one, then both are accessible from the middle of the cockpit sole or engine hatch - saves groping around for the outboard one under fuel tanks etc.

Apart from being quite short, it is felt that it is a bit more convenient than the long automotive dipstick which feeds to the front of the engine. Especially on open cockpit boats where access to the front of the motor is more limited.

Rocker Covers

How about chromed; powder-coated or plated valve rocker covers?

Here are three options we have been working on:

A Cummins bayonet lock dipstick

Left: Polished aluminium; finished with a high temperature clear lacquer

Middle: Polished, then Nickel and Chrome Plate.

Right: Polished, then two pack 'chrome' wheel paint, followed by two pack high temperature clear lacquer

Pricing is between £20 and about £30 per cover. You'll need six for each engine.

The ones shown in the photo are all isolated type (Cummins Pt. #??) Which have an 'O' seal under the head of the retaining bolt. There are several types; Refer to the manual.

You can, of course, paint them when you do the rest of the motor, or another option is anodizing, which we've not looked into yet.

Exhaust Manifold Heat shield and cover plate.
