About Asha

Team Asha’s training program is a fundraiser for supporting Asha for Education sponsored basic educational initiatives and projects across India. By training for a race (bike ride, marathon, triathlon), we spread awareness about Asha for Education. Donations are made directly to Asha for Education and not to the training athletes. Training costs and race registration fees are paid for by the athletes themselves.

Every organization has a focus. Asha for Education is committed to bringing hope into lives of underprivileged children in India by providing much needed education and in some cases, basic amenities also. In fact, Asha for Education often works with other organizations, jointly funding projects or referring and receiving ideas for projects from them.

Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator in the US, ranked Asha for Education as the top charity operating on less than $2 million a year. More details can be found here: https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=7630

Asha for Education financial records are available on www.ashanet.org.

Asha Projects

Project selection

a. Asha for Education chapters receive project proposals from different organizations in India. Asha for Education volunteers go through these proposals carefully, and correspond with the organization, soliciting more information where required. Various factors considered are:

        • Past history of the organization

        • Objectives of the project

        • Proposed plan of action

        • Number of children covered

        • Number of people involved in its implementation

        • An itemized budget and any other relevant information.

b. An Asha for Education volunteer visits the project site (at his/her own expense) to evaluate first hand the organization, the site and the feasibility of the proposed project.

c. It is only after the volunteer has been completely satisfied, that the project is approved for funding.

Note:

        • Asha for Education chapters are fairly autonomous and it is up to them to choose projects independently or work with other chapters jointly in funding projects.

        • Asha for Education strongly encourages members and people from the local community to recommend projects that they have first-hand information about and which could be monitored by people they know well in India.

        • Asha for Education also works with other non-profit organizations. However, Asha’s involvement is restricted only to the educational component of the projects.

Project monitoring

In order to monitor the progress of the project, Asha for Education requires the organization conducting the project to provide complete financial and narrative reports along with photographs, at least twice a year. In addition, Asha for Education volunteers going to India visit project sites to evaluate the progress of the project and verify the reports sent by organization. Asha for Education reserves the right to terminate funding at any time if it is not completely satisfied with the progress.

Realizing that the children involved are the ones most affected if such a situation arises, Asha for Education volunteers invest a lot of effort in the initial stages itself while choosing projects and evaluates the soundness of organizations implementing them.

Donation to a specific project

Asha SV has a list of projects it supports on its website, and you can pick one project to champion, and read up on it and use it when you are communicating with your donors for fundraising. It always helps to talk about a specific project rather than to just provide a list of projects. Donors and you can get details of these projects at http://sv.ashanet.org/
