Universal Mind

‘We are the Universe trying to make sense of itself.’- Ambassador Delenn, Babylon 5.

This theory describes the universe as a kind of immense amoeba, the nucleus of which is the Universal Mind (UM). This UM is surrounded by etheric matter of varying degrees of subtlety, and within this matter may be found the rest of known (and unknown) existence. As living, animate beings we are points of concentrated matter containing conscious and unconscious awareness with a thread-like link connected us to the universal mind. The following picture is a basic 2-dimensional representation of this complicated multidimensional entity.

How this UM came into being is anyone’s guess. Its ultimate origin is not relevant to this theory. Suffice it to say that it came into existence and began to expand in ways that we cannot easily comprehend. Its boundaries stretched out into the void, forming as it went a sea of etheric matter. This matter could be moulded by desire into new kinds of forms and existence. So that is what happened, and the universe created itself, and that is about as far as I wish to go on the matter.

We shall now move on to the more interesting ideas connected with the actual workings of the universe now that everything is in place. As far as we are concerned, the first important and potentially shocking revelation is that we are not actually separate individuals but are in fact very small offshoots from the UM. Our purpose is to gain knowledge and experience which is then absorbed by the UM. When we are conceived, the UM creates a focus of etheric matter and allows it to grow and take shape. While this is taking place, a thread is sent out from within the UM and enters into the newly formed physical entity during the final stages of gestation. This thread connects itself to the subtler, etheric body that aligns itself exactly within the entity and does not let go until physical death. This etheric body will be the container for the entity's personality traits and local memory for this lifetime. Very soon after this, the thread splits up and forms a number of energy centres, or chakras throughout the etheric body. These chakras can be thought of as two-way receptors. Their job is to receive input from the external environment and transfer it to the UM. They also receive impulses from the UM and deliver them into the body.

There are a number of chakras but there are seven that are normally understood.

Root/Base chakra. Located at the base of the spine and provides impetus for a solid and practical material existence, especially the need to provide nourishment to feed the physical body.

Sex chakra. Located at the genitals and provides the impetus for procreation.

Solar plexus chakra. Located, funnily enough, at the solar plexus and provides the fight or flight mechanisms required for survival.

Heart chakra. Located at the heart and provides the impetus for the seeking out of friends and companions.

Throat chakra. Located at the throat and provides the impetus for communication with others.

Third eye chakra. Located on the forehead between the eyes. Its job is to provide the impetus to seek higher knowledge and expand consciousness.

Crown chakra. Located at the top of the head. It is the point where the physical and etheric bodies communicate with each other. It is also the point at which the UM link enters the body. Access to higher realms can be sought through this chakra.

The point where the connecting thread enters the physical body is through the crown chakra, and between this and the third eye chakra is a boundary, also known as the abyss. This abyss stops the conscious mind from easily making contact with the unconscious mind, which has access to the UM. The abyss creates a feeling of individuality within the entity and prevents knowledge of the true nature of the universe.

When it is time for the entity to die, all the energy centres start to close up and the connecting thread begins to pull away from the etheric and physical bodies. Death occurs when the crown centre, at the end of the thread leaves the body. With no controlling mechanism to keep the etheric body aligned, this subtler body drifts away from the physical body and is eventually reabsorbed into the etheric matter to be recycled.

So we are not individuals but part of the same ONE consciousness. We are in fact each other, and occasionally our awareness thread can move close to another's within the etheric matter and touch allowing us to know what they know. When this happens we call it mind reading. When two people do it with each other at the same time we call it telepathy. Sometimes the barrier is lowered and our conscious mind drifts along the awareness thread and gives the impression of existence outside of the body. This is known as astral projection.

The goal of the Mystic should be to develop the techniques necessary to cross the abyss of one’s own being to allow the conscious and unconscious minds to easily pass information to and from the UM and the surrounding etheric matter.

During the early development of the Universe, desires for change would be passed back to the UM. The UM would then issue the necessary creative impulse through its matter flow to bring about the change, but once the Universe developed to a reasonable level, the only impulse that was sent back was basically one to 'do it yourself'. That is all part of our development. So, whereas millions of years ago, a more primitive form of awareness could see the necessity to bring about change, the UM would oblige and send the impulse to create the change, these days we are left to bring about our own changes. We've been around long enough so we should be able to do it. Of course this is true of most 'normal' day to day things such as mowing the lawn and getting up for work. When it comes to desires requiring the use of more mystical means the UM is used to letting us get on with our lives so will not normally intervene. So unless we can achieve the result by 'normal' means, we don't get very far.

But! If we can develop a means of crossing the barrier that stops us seeing the truth behind existence, we can cause changes to occur using our connection to the rest of the Universal Mind. Many forms of awareness altering techniques (gnosis) have been developed to help the mystic achieve this, but it is far from easy.

Examples - If we can consciously see beyond the abyss we can direct our awareness thread towards the thread of another and come into contact allowing us to communicate telepathically or read each other's minds. In doing this we must avoid becoming entangled with someone else's thread as this may lead to possession, and neurosis. We could also inadvertently cause the death of another. I have heard many examples of situations where a person was dying but could be saved by the death of another. This other person will have had their awareness thread entangled with the dying person's to such an extent that it was being pulled out of their body.

We could also direct and redirect creative energy from the UM to use for our own ends. Why can we not influence the lottery so that our six numbers come out? The reason is simple. The randomness of the result is actually an average combination of the numbers that are desired by all participants plus an average inserted by the UM based on all previous similar drawings of numbers. This creates a line of natural probability that is difficult to change. Since events in the Universe are created by condensing the desires from the UM into concrete reality, they clearly start off in a state of relative flux and could be influenced. The more condensed they become, i.e. the closer to physical manifestation they are, the harder it is for us to change their course. Phil Hine mentions this when he says that you should 'enchant long' - meaning that if you wish to change the future you will have more success, the further off into the future the object is. Similarly you should 'divine short' for the same reason. If you wish to look beyond the abyss and seek the future the closer that future is to manifestation the more accurate your view will be.

The aim is to develop various methods of fooling the ‘guardians of the abyss’. Hypnotherapists do this to some extent by distracting what they call ‘the critical censor’. This allows easier access to the unconscious mind and allows them to create a change in behaviour.
