After facing successful interview at Sri Bhuvanendra College, Karkala, I had been sent to Bhandarkars’ College, Kundapur to teach there. I faced interview during the month of June, many of my classmates attended the interview and I liked the way in which they conducted the interview. Initially, the Vice-Principal, Prof. Nair welcomed us. Later, they called all the applicants - one by one to face the Vice-Principal, Dr. H. Shantaram and other Executive Committee Members of the team. They asked about my educational institutions, my affiliations, They liked Loka Seva Junior College. They also verified all my merit certificates issued by Alike Loka Seva Junior College, verified my Proficiency Prize Certificates, etc. Later, we have been directed to face subject experts. Prof. Menon, the senior faculty of the college along with other faculty of the Department asked several questions about commerce subjects, they also gave me a topic and I was asked to prepare 10 minute lecture on the same topic and deliver in front of 25-30 participants including Vice-Principal, Dr. H. Shantaram and other subject experts. We were directed to refer books from library. The topic, I got, “Borrowing Methods of Company”. The time allotted to us 15 minutes, I could not find that topic due to my insufficient knowledge, but I had good knowledge about company, meaning of company, features of company, types of company, etc. I prepared a lecture card writing all the points about company, meaning, features, types, later some points about borrowing methods. I was surprised to see a galaxy of many seniors in the classroom with blackboard, duster and chalk. Controlling my inhibitions, emotions, I started my first lecture on borrowing methods, after writing in clear words, “Borrowing Methods of a Company” in the blackboard. I explained about company, how it is different from other forms of organization, the great definition given by Lord Justice Lindley as "an association of many persons who contribute money or money's worth to a common stock and employed it in some trade or business and who share the profit or loss arising there from” I also explained all the features of company. My allotted 10 minutes over, they seem to be satisfied by my lecture. With a sigh of contentment, I came to my home. Within a couple of days, I received my first appointment letter directing me to join as Stop Gap Lecturer in Bhandakars’ College, Kundapur. I decided to join the college. I joined the college on July 1, the Principal Prof. Narayana Achar informed me that I would not get any salary until my results were declared. Hence only after August 4, I got my salary from the College.
I liked the students, College, the Colleagues with whom I worked. It was Mr. Kusumakar Hebbar who accommodated me in his room at Paramayya Compound at Kundapur. He was staying there since two years. I can remember some of the inmates of that compound. Mr. Baby George, who was teaching English also used to stay for some time. Mr. Vasanatha Bannadi, though belonged to Kundapur, had his office there. Mr. Hebbar was good in cooking, he used to prepare rice, sambar and knows the art of keeping friendship with all the neighbors to get things done easily. I stayed there for about 5 months, till I left the College during October 1982. Still I cherish the Parijatha Hotel, the jokes of Prof. Mithantaya, good faculty of the department like Prof. Mohandas Pai, Prof. Narayanaswami, Prof. Shantaram, other faculty of the college like Prof. Navada, Prof. Plaket, Prof. Tunga, Prof. Balakrishna Bhat, Prof. Shambhushankara and dynamic office manager Sri Vittala.
In spite of the efforts of Dr. H. Shantaram to accommodate me to the regular posts of lecturers there, they could not do so, as I was not the applicant for the posts advertised during 1981, hence, after regular appointment, I have to leave the students I loved most. Contrary to the established traditions of college, the B batch of I B.Com students arranged touching farewell to me, a stop-gap lecturer at Bhandarkars College on 16th Saturday 1982, and presented memento and still cherish the nice words spoken on the occasion.
