This was the first shortened SCL Tournament. Although there were less games, the tourney had it's normal flare for the dramatic. After a very tight round-robin in which all teams were alive going into the final game, the playoffs expanded to a semifinal format. The first semi between NU and Orcutt saw NU build a 4-1 advantage and in total control. However, playing two men down, Orcutt incredibly rallied to level the game. This forced the first game ever decided by penalty kicks in which NU advanced, 4-3.
SLU advanced over Brighton in an uninspired semi, but the final pitted a rematch of the first Cup Final of 1994. San Luis United took a commanding 3-1 lead seconds before half-time. A costly SLU tactical lapse allowed NU to pull one back before the half-time whistle. NU fed off the momentum shift and completed the comeback ending SLU's dream of becoming the first team to repeat as champs. Nipomo United becomes the first two-time Cup Champion.
