Historical information

Alexander and James Hepburn died at their residences in Waikomiti (possibly Glen Eden area, but the old name covered a large area). (Death notices, Auckland Star, 3 April 1883, p. 2; Auckland Star 19 June 1883, p.2 )

Alexander Hepburn was born in Inverness, Scotland, in 1803, and sailed first to Sydney in 1839, then on to Auckland in 1841, with his wife Catherine nee McIntyre (1803-1871) and their son James (born 1841). Initially, Hepburn was a sawyer, working between Titirangi and Freeman's Bay, but by 1865 he had set himself up with a brickyard at the end of what is now Hepburn Road. With his son-in-law James Archibald, he worked on roading and other contracts for the Waitemata County.

After James Hepburn's death, his widow did succeed in selling some of the work's bricks to the construction project for the Costley Wards at Epsom in 1889.
