Historical information

The Burrow family lived at New Windsor from 1892, until possibly just after Mary's death in 1906. John Burrow sold the 4 1/2 acre farm in 1910. (Deeds Index 15A.775) The farm was known as "Firbank". John Burrow was a watchmaker and jeweller, working on Queen Street next to the Albert Hotel.

From the Burrow family history:

John Burrow (born in Manchester 1854) married Mary Lincoln 16 May 1876 in the Norwich Presbyterian Church. She was 18 (born in 1857), daughter of James Lincoln, a shoe manufacturer. There is a family belief that she was distantly related to Abraham Lincoln, but this has yet to be proved.

In 1889, with five children in the family, John Burrow came home one day, announced that he'd sold the business, booked a passage for Sydney, and that they were all leaving in a month's time. The family believe this was because John had TB.

They sailed in the Kaikoura -- and carried on to New Zealand. They were in Wolfe Street, Freemans Bay in 1890, then Avondale in 1893.

Mary died of blood poisoning, caused by the prick of a thorn. John Burrow later remarried, and moved to Pukekohe, where he and his second wife are buried.
