About The Course
To work as a public high school math teacher in the majority of the country, you'll need to pass the Praxis II Mathematics: Content Knowledge test. This 2-hour, 50-multiple-choice-question exam is intended for those who have completed, or are about to complete, an appropriate bachelor's degree program
. The test is administrated by the nonprofit Educational Testing Service (ETS).

The Praxis II Mathematics: Content Knowledge test measures your proficiency in several content areas, including algebra and number theory, measurement, geometry, trigonometry, functions, calculus, data analysis and statistics, probability, matrix algebra and discrete mathematics. Throughout the exam, you'll also be tested in various process categories, which will gauge your ability to solve mathematical problems, use different types of reasoning and make mathematical connections. The Praxis II also tests your understanding of how and when to use technology for problem solving and mathematical analysis.
You can refresh your math skills ahead of the Praxis II by completing Education Portal's chapter on mathematics. Our brief video lessons are led by experienced professional educators, and the quizzes that accompany each lesson not only test your knowledge of math, they also expose you to the types of questions you'll encounter come test day.
The Praxis II Mathematics: Content Knowledge test is offered via computer several times a year; you can find specific dates on the ETS website. The test also can be taken four times per year in a paper-based format. Registration
for both forms of the test is available online, by phone or via mail; registration for the paper-delivered test ends approximately one month before the test date.
The day of the test, be sure you arrive at the testing center on time (30 minutes prior to test time is recommended for those taking the computer-based test). You'll need to bring your admission ticket, a photo ID and, if you're taking the paper-based test, several sharpened No. 2 pencils. You also should bring a graphing calculator; please note that test administrators are required to clear the memory of your calculator before and after you take the Praxis II math test.
Scores are available via phone and online approximately two to three weeks after the computer-based test or around three weeks after the paper-based test. Your scores also will be sent to as many as three licensing agencies or institutions, which you can choose during the registration
process.
The minimum score needed to pass the Praxis II Mathematics: Content Knowledge test, and thus qualify for teacher certification, is set by each individual state that uses the exam. In addition to noting your total score, your score report will give you a breakdown of how well you performed in each of the content areas on the Praxis II, which include the following:
Algebra and Number Theory
One of the largest content areas on the Praxis II Mathematics: Content Knowledge test, algebra and number theory comprises approximately 16% of all questions. This section might test your knowledge of complex numbers systems or your ability to solve problems that involve ratios or percentages. You also might be asked to graph inequalities or use algebraic representations of spheres or planes.
Measurement
In the section on measurement, you'll be asked about appropriate units of measure, and you might have to analyze precision and accuracy in measuring situations. Other topics covered in this content category, which makes up around 6% of the test, include limits in measurement and successive approximation.
Geometry
The geometry section of the Praxis II covers topics like congruence and similarity and the Pythagorean theorem. You'll need to know the properties of various shapes, including triangles, circles, parallelograms and trapezoids, and be able to solve problems based on these properties. This content category accounts for approximately 10% of the Praxis II math exam.
Trigonometry
This section features around 8% of the questions on the test and measures your knowledge of the six basic trigonometric functions. You might be asked about the laws of sines and cosines, and you're expected to know how to convert between rectangular and polar coordinate systems.
Functions
Another 16% of the Praxis II math test focuses on functions. For this section of the exam, you'll need to know about domain and range, asymptotes and discontinuities. You might be asked to determine the inverse of a function or interpret a 3-dimensional graph. You'll also need to understand the properties of various types of functions, including exponential, polynomial and rational.
Calculus
Questions on calculus comprise approximately 12% of this exam. In this section, you might be asked to determine limits of a function or approximate integrals and derivatives. Other topics that might be covered include the mean value theorem and the fundamental theorem of calculus.
Data Analysis and Statistics
This section of the test measures your proficiency at organizing, describing, comparing and analyzing data. You'll be expected to know what constitutes a well-designed study, as well as what are appropriate measures of central tendency. This category accounts for 10-12% of the questions on the Praxis II.
Probability
Approximately 4-6% of questions on the Praxis II cover probability. You might be required to demonstrate your understanding of sample space or determine the expected value of a random variable. Other topics covered in this section might include probability distribution, conditional probability and independent events.
Matrix Algebra
Questions on matrix algebra make up around 8-10% of the Praxis II math test.
