We are delighted that you are considering a wedding at St Bartholomew's!
A marriage service, wherever it is held, is a public declaration of love and commitment to your partner. If you choose to get married in a Church of England church, there is an added dimension - the assurance that God cares about your relationship and that his resources and strength are available to help you.
Banns
Banns of Marriage need to be read out three times in Church at Sunday morning services. We recommend that couples attend services when banns are to be read.
Music
As well as hymns, there is a choice of music for before and after the service and at the entrance of the bride. There may also be music played during the signing of the register. This can all be discussed with the priest, as well as with our organist and choirmaster. There is a link at the bottom of this page to suggested hymns which might help your decision.
Flowers
The church has an exceptional team of flower arrangers who make the church look beautiful all through the year, especially at Christmas and Easter. We do not mind if couples wish to use outside florists, but they are likely to be considerably more expensive and do not know the church as well. If there are two weddings on the same day, it is possible to share flowers.
Orders of Service
Orders of Service are not essential, but it can be a nice momento of the day. Having the words of any hymns printed in an order of service can also be more convenient than using a hymn book. We will arrange the service with you, and then you can use professional printers, or we can print them for you for a small fee. Please let us know if you would like this.
Bells
The church has a peal of eight hand bells which can be rung before and after the service. They are especially audible outside when the bride arrives at the porch and the couple leave the church.

If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. John 2:1-11
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ Now standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, ‘Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.’ So they took it. Philippians 4:4-9
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 3:12-17
As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 1 John 4:7-12
Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us.
