Local Schools

Few parishes of our size have seven schools, viz. three mainstream primary schools, two special schools and two secondary schools. And they are excellent schools providing a high standard of education for hundreds of boys and girls. However, not only do they prepare our young people for future life they also provide employment for quite a large workforce, including lollypop people, cleaners, housekeepers, caretakers, special needs assistants, secretaries, teachers, deputy principals and principals. We greatly appreciate our schools and should support them in every possible way.

The Primary Schools of St Aengus's Parish

SCOIL AONGHUSA JUNIOR

When Scoil Aonghusa opened in 1975 it catered for the full range of primary school classes. However as the parish was growing at an extraordinary rate it soon became clear that a second school was needed. Building began soon after the original school was opened and a second school was born. Eamon Tuohy took on the role as principal of Scoil Aonghusa Junior and Donnchadh O Faogáin became principal of Scoil Aonghusa Senior. Since then the junior school has catered for boys and girls from junior infants to second class. Both schools are Catholic co-ed primary schools.

SCOIL AONGHUSA SENIOR

The senior school currently has 221 boys and girls on roll and it caters for children from third to sixth class. Like its junior partner it is a vibrant school with 16 teachers and 6 special needs assistants. These include 8 mainstream teachers, a learning support teacher, 3 resource teachers, a behaviour support teacher, a language support teacher, a home school community liaison teacher and an administrative principal.

SCOIL IOSA

The school was established in 1979 and at its peak catered for over 500 pupils from the locality. It is located just off the Greenhills Road and adjacent to the beautiful Tymon Park.Today there are 79 children in the school from Junior Infants to Sixth Class including six in a special class for children with autism. There are four mainstream classes - a Junior and Senior Infants Class, a First and Second Class,a Third and Fourth Class and a Fifth and Sixth Class.

Scoil losa Mission Statement: Scoil losa is co-educational Catholic school operating under the patronage of the Archbishop of Dublin.

SCOIL ROIS

St. Rose's National School is a co-educational school for children with Specific Reading Difficulties (Dyslexia). Situated on the same campus as Scoil Aonghusa it is governed by a Board of Management in accordance with the Dept. of Education and Skills. At present there are seven class teachers and an administrative principal. Approx. 30 places become available every year and the school caters for 8 to 12 year olds (3rd to 6th classes) who are enrolled on a temporary, whole-time, basis, normally for 2 years. The pupils follow the full curriculum (except Irish) with emphasis on intensive English literacy instruction.

ST JOSEPH'S SCHOOL

St Joseph's School caters for pupils with Special Educational Needs.The National Primary School curriculum (slightly moderated) is taught to younger pupils. At secondary level the boys and girls are prepared for the Junior Certificate, Leaving Cert Applied and FETAC courses.The school was established originally in Tallaght village and moved to its current site in 1981. St Joseph's serves a wide catchment area of South West Dublin that includes Tallaght,Templeogue, Rathfarnham, Clondalkin, Lucan, Newcastle, Saggart, Rathcoole and North West Wicklow.The school operates under the patronage of the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin and has a locally constituted board of management.

TALLAGHT COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Tallaght Community School opened in 1972 as the first community school in Ireland.A radical and experimental concept at the time, the community school model has prospered and matured in the intervening years.The school serves a major population centre (Tallaght pop. 90,000+) located about 7 miles southwest of Dublin city.TCS caters for boys and girls from 12 to 18 years from multi-cultural backgrounds.
