SMT 2020 IG Meeting Activities

Book Discussion

At the SMT Interest Group on Improvisation meeting in November, we will be holding a discussion of two recent books on improvisation: Dana Gooley's Fantasies of Improvisation (OUP 2018) and Eric Lewis's Intents and Purposes (U Mich. Press, 2019). The authors will be joining us for a discussion during our interest-group meeting Zoom hour. We will also conduct a preliminary online discussion board about the books.

Especially in light of recent events, we ask that you read the discussion board rules and follow them closely so that we can have a productive, respectful, and stimulating discussion about the books and about improvisation in general ahead of the IG meeting. Both books, in their own ways, engage in critical aspects of improvisation studies. We humbly believe that improvisation studies have a part to play in reframing music scholarship as well as the subdiscipline of music theory and analysis, as part of multi-voiced scholarly dialogues.

Vice-chair election

At the 2020 IG meeting, Gilad Rabinovitch will conclude his term as chair, and vice-chair Andrew Goldman will rotate to chair. Thus, we need to elect a new vice-chair. If you would like to self-nominate for vice-chair to rotate to chair after two years, please communicate with us.
