When increment borer gets stuck in wood, it is often difficult to
extract the borer. This is especially the case if you are using
12-mm borer and sampling hardwood cores. I had such a
difficulty when coring oak in Hokkaido, Japan.
To solve this problem, we have developed a
new extractor for extracting 12-mm increment borer in collaboration
with Neil Loader of Swansea University. The 12-mm
extractor is based on 5-mm extractor (Loader NJ, Waterhouse JS
(2014) An extractor device for stuck or broken increment bores.
Tree-Ring Res 70(2):157–160).
Here is the Youtube video of our (old) prototype for extracting stuck
12-mm borer.

Now we are testing a new version and we are almost ready to
make it public.
Alternatively, stuck increment borer can be extracted by using Smartborer.
We have an optional socket named "clip socket", which has a clip similar to
the one attached to increment borer handle. Using clip socket,
increment borer can be fixed to the socket so that two (or three) people
can pull the borer backward while one person
reverses the borer. This way, you can quickly extract a stuck
increment borer. If you wish, you can try both 12-mm borer extractor and
the "clip socket" at my booth during Worlddendro2018.
