Smart increment borer (SmartborerTM, PAT) is a device for automatic sampling of increment cores. It converts the high-speed, low-torque input from a battery-operated Makita electric wrench to a low-speed, high-torque output via planetary gear system. There are three models, for sampling (1) 5-mm cores of soft- and hardwood, (2)12-mm cores of softwood, and (3) 12-mm cores of hardwood. It was invented by Akira Kagawa and Takeshi Fujiwara of FFPRI. It is capable of sampling an increment core in three minutes, as shown in these videos.
