- Formats
- For eBooks there are basically two common file formats: EPUB and MOBI. Often the files are provided with copy protection (Digital Rights Management DRM). Therefore they cannot always be read on different devices.
- Reader
- eBooks can be read on two principal types of devices:
- reader with E-Ink (require external illumination)
- smart phones, tablets or laptops, etc. (which use their own lighting).
- Programs (=apps)
- Reading eBook on computers you need special programs, such as Calibre or Sigil. Some web browsers offer special Add-ons. On smartphones and tablets, which ar advisable for reading, you will need appropriate apps with which you can also buy books in different stores.
- Stores
Store 1: Apple
eBooks are available in Apple's popular EPUB-format in iBookstore.
Store 2: Amazon
eBooks are available in the MOBI-format.
Store 3: Google
eBooks are available from Google in common EPUB-format at Google play.
Other Stores
There are other stores which offer their eBooks (but often only in some countries).
